This is my piece from the collaborative art show "The Dreams I Gave Her," curated by Kelli Burton and Yulia Topchiy. It was inspired by a poem of same name, written by Cate Peebles.
lyrics
Paper spent, a lover's bent
Burn it all, I'm still flattered
On our own, campfire cologne
Ashes cold, but not scattered
Waking up, waking up
Waking up's not coming down
Dreams are lent, not heaven sent
Troubadours and screen idols
Morning sun, the night's all done
Winter breeze, cold and vital
Waking up, waking up
Waking up's not coming down
Morning sun, the night's all done
A body's work is never over
World is green, unsung, unseen
Dandelions and three-leaf clover
I spent my New Year's hangover listening to "Sky Mall" on repeat, when I discovered my new favorite bass player. "Fugue State" is what you get if the Muscle Shoals musicians took a break to noodle around on Bach and eventually became my wake-up alarm. "First Place" reminds me of that scene in "Clerks" where Randal walks into the adult video store. t0cktock
My spirits are immediately lifted when I hear the first track in this album. "Funky Duck" is one of few songs that slaps without a drum kit. The rest of the album is a cozy cushion of zen; funky, upbeat, low-volume. This was my chicken soup when I got COVID at the beginning of the year. t0cktock
Alanna Royale's approach to classic soul honors the sounds and artists of the '60s and '70s while adding sparkling contemporary flair. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 15, 2023
Everytime I hear this album I groove like a tiny dancing Pomeranian getting a haircut. Anyone that hears this will definitely get blessed and funkified from the great Vulf. musicandmyth
